Cora Americus (Anderson) Washington passed away at the age of 93 years on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at 2:27 a.m., in Sanctuary at Holy Cross.

Life began for Cora in Xenia, Ohio, when she was born to Bertrand and Grace (Odom) Anderson on August 21, 1923.  She and Edward Washington were married on June 7, 1941 in Elyria, Ohio.  He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Washington was a retired OB Technician at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center where she was employed for many years.  She also was the owner of the first BBQ Restaurant, Hot Sauce Eddie’s at Washington and Illinois Streets.  She was a member of Olivet A.M.E. Church.

Mrs. Washington loved gardening, of which petunias were her favorite flower.  She loved to cook and do crossword puzzles.  Her passion was crocheting.  She loved to laugh and make other people laugh.

She has left a loving family of two daughters: Wilma Stuckey and Dorita (Spencer) Jennings of South Bend, Indiana; two sons: James Washington of South Bend, and Paul Washington of Elkhart, Indiana; 11 grandchildren: Edward, Loren, Juanita, Johnny, Bonnie, Rosetta, Aisha, Makisha, Philip, Andrea, and Christopher; eight great-grandchildren, and multiple great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a son, Ronald Lee.

I had the pleasure of working with Cora at St. Joseph Hospital Mishawaka on the night shift. We also shared many luncheons together with the OB ladies and had a lot of fun. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and will keep you in my prayers. Darryl Williams Vergonet RN
