Cheryl B. Alvarez

July 20, 1948 ~ October 24, 2017 (age 69) 69 Years Old


Cheryl Frances Booze Alvarez, 69, of South Bend, passed away peacefully on October 24th, 2017, after a courageous six-year fight with breast cancer. She was born in Chicago to Fred and Girtlee (Ramey) Booze. She received her high school diploma from the University of Chicago Lab School, and two master’s degrees from Roosevelt University.

She had a 35 year career as a Spanish teacher, as an adjunct college professor, and middle and high school teacher. After several years of teaching at LaSalle High School in South Bend, and upon its closing, she transferred to Washington High School, from which she retired in 2015.

Cheryl was an avid traveler, having explored Europe, Africa, Central and South America, and the Caribbean. She loved ice skating, swimming, gardening, and RV travel with her family. She also had a lifelong fondness for her pets. Her greatest joy was her role as a selfless and devoted mother.

Cheryl is survived by her beloved husband of 43 years, José Alvarez; two daughters, Karen Alvarez (Marc) and Kristen Alvarez (Laurent); nephew, Christopher Frizell (Carol); and many other cherished relatives. Cheryl was predeceased by her parents and sister, Carolyn Frizell.

Services will be private. In honor of Cheryl’s legacy donation may be directed to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Rd., Mishawaka, IN 46545, and the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637.

Arrangements have been entrusted with Alford’s Mortuary.
