Mae Elease Moody was born January 3, 1932, to the late Annie Lee Curtis Andrews and Tom Aaron Andrews in Springfield, Ga. and was the 8th of 11 children. Her brothers and sisters include: Willie (LauraBelle) Andrews, Sidney (Delphine) Andrews, Mattie Lue (Elder) Chambers, Kathleen (Rubon) Griffin, Carrie Andrews, John Edward “Eddie”(Daisy, Lorreta) Andrews, Robbie Lee (Melzetta) Andrews, Aaron (Bertha) Andrews, Harry (Doris) Andrews, and Rosa Lee Andrews. Harry and Rosa Lee Andrews are the remaining living siblings. Mae Elease was 86 years old when she departed this world on her journey home, August 4,2018.
Mae met and married Willie Eddry Moody, (deceased) in Springfield, Ga. on September 29, 1948. They moved to South Bend, Ind. in 1950 and resided with their loving uncle and aunt, Raleigh and Lizzie Lee(deceased). To this union four children were born, Delores Hall of Fairburn, Ga., Patricia Hunt of Indianapolis, In., Torrence (Frances) Moody of Mt. Laurel, NJ, and Tracey Moody of Austin,Tx.
Mae attended school in Effingham Co., Ga and completed her GED in South Bend, Ind. She also took classes at IUSB and many training classes for varied jobs. She started her career at Memorial Hospital as a nurses’ aid for many years. She was also a hard-working employee at Hansel Center, Planned Parenthood of South Bend, Housing Allowance Office Inc., Secretary for Pilgrim Baptist Church, and Alzheimer’s and Dementia Services of Northern Ind., where she retired from in 2013.
Mae’s passions included volunteering for various church ministries and civic organizations including the Urban League and Guild of South Bend. She was a board member of the YWCA of South Bend from 1975-1978. She later in life became a member of the Order of Eastern Star through a lifelong friend, Lillian Blake. Mae was an active member and officer of the Northern Indiana District Missionary Baptist Association Women’s Auxiliary for many years. She also was active with the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education and attended many National Baptist USA, Inc. conventions. At Pilgrim Baptist Church Mrs. Moody joined the Senior Usher’s Ministry after she realized that she could not sing as pointed out by Brother Mark Amos! For 13 years Mae served as Vice President of the Anna Hutchinson Missionary Society and President for 6 years. She attended Wednesday Night Bible Study regularly as well as Sunday School. She was also a member of Church Women United of St. Joseph County, Indiana and other church-related circles and ministries.
Mrs. Moody leaves to cherish her memory 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren. Special family friends include Mrs. Eddye Denson, Mrs. Janice Haygood, Mrs. Ruvader Hall, Mr. Clark Price, Mrs. Janice Thomas, Deacon Paul Gill and Rev. H. Gregory Haygood. Many other friends and family members were dear to Mae’s heart. A special thanks to Grace Hospice nursing staff, Memorial Hospital 6th floor doctors and staff and Holy Cross Rehabilitation Center.
Services for Mrs. Moody will be held Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Pilgrim Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with a one-hour viewing prior.
