Minnie Garrison Obituary

SOUTH BEND - Minnie Helen Garrison was born in Wrightsville, Arkansas on October 23, 1917 to the union of Walter Lewis and Minnie (Mays) Walker. She departed this life on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the age of 100.

Growing up in Arkansas and Missouri, Minnie attended the Sand Road School. As a young woman in the early 1940's, Minnie moved with her family to Michigan.

After Minnie's marriage in 1941 to Leonard C. Reed, the couple moved to South Bend, Indiana, where she remained until 1953, when she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Her career and community interests were many. While living in Milwaukee, Minnie was a faithful member of Greater Galilee Baptist Church. She found employment as a domestic worker and as an assembly line operator for General Telephone Exchange. She ended her career in the foster care field. She was a member of the Masonic Lodge, where she contributed a great deal of time and work. Minnie's favorite activities were going fishing and tending a small backyard garden, where her garden plants and houseplants flourished.

Subsequently, while in Milwaukee, she met and married Sterlyn Garrison. Although she was not blessed to have children, Minnie enjoyed her nephews and nieces, as well as several foster children. In 2001, Minnie was persuaded to move back to South Bend to live near her brothers and other family members. She found her church home at Sweet Home Baptist Church where she served on the Mother's Board until she was unable to attend services.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Luella (Walker) Banks; and brothers, Walter L. Walker Jr. (Addie), Roosevelt Walker (Marie), and Mitchell Walker. Survivors include her brother, Alfred (Ruth) Walker of Niles, Michigan; a special church daughter, Brenda Martin-Groves; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Services will be at Sweet Home Ministries on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 12:00 p.m., with viewing from 11:00 a.m. to noon.
