A.D. Cross Obituary

A.D Cross, born on June 27, 1948 in Tribbett, MS, and a longtime resident of South Bend, Indiana, departed this life on October 1, 2023.

He was a dedicated worker, a creative soul, and a loving family man. A.D. was a true pillar in the community, known for his compassion and generous spirit. He lived his life according to the sentiment of Maya Angelou's quote, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." His impact was far-reaching, and his memory will persist in the hearts of those he touched. A.D.'s dedication shone brightly in his professional life as a painter for the City of South Bend. His love for his city was matched by his passion for his work, leading to a rewarding 27-year tenure with the South Bend parks and recreation department. His commitment to his community was acknowledged when he received the "Golden key" to the city, a testament to his bravery for saving children from a burning building.

Beyond his work, A.D was a lover of the arts and nature; he spent many afternoons tending to his garden, blaring blues music, and mastering the grill. His hobbies, which also included visiting the casino and meticulously caring for his treasured Cadillac, were infused with his unique charm and vibrant personality.

A.D was a loving and compassionate man, survived by his significant other of 20 plus years, Barbara Ellison, Four children Carmen Cross of Indianapolis, A.D Cross, Jr. of Texas, Aaron (Lindsay) and TaNeisha Cross both of South Bend along with 11 known grandchildren. Sisters Margaret Jamison, Shirley Warren, Carol Smith, Darlene Smith, and Yolanda (Ebonaii) Lott, and a special sister-in-law, Linda Smith; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relative and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses (Babe Ruth) and Pearl (Doll) Smith, ; brothers Willie D. Cross, Morris (Sunnyman) Smith, Moses "Jr" Smith. SIsters, Joann Smith, Laverne "Bonnie" Smith, Barbara, "Bobbi" Neal, and Doris Smith and one grandson, Abdul Cross.

His close-knit group of friends will deeply miss A.D., as he was the heartbeat of their gatherings. In remembering A.D., we celebrate a life lived to its fullest and a man who made a lasting impact on many. His legacy lives on in every life he touched, every soul he lifted, and every heart he warmed.
