Arthur Lee Hughes was born on February 21, 1957, in Chicago, Illinois to George Hughes Sr. and Minnie Lee (Banks) Hughes.
He attended Coleman Elementary and Hirsch High School. As a middle child, he kept up with his brothers and his father, learning all of the “fix it” trades like plumbing, electrical and auto repair. He worked at Freight Arranger Incorporated supervising the loading, unloading, and documentation of international and domestic freights. He was a manager there for 15 years. Later Arthur became the property manager for apartments on Exchange Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, commonly known as the “White Building,” where he did a variety of maintenance work until his retirement.
He was a loving husband to Ivory Avukpor. Arthur was an excellent brother, father, uncle, and friend. His kind and giving spirit was felt in every relationship. He would give of his time and money in remarkable ways. Arthur was always concerned about his family.
He was preceded in death by his father George Hughes Sr., and mother Minnie Lee
(Banks) Hughes; his sister Diann Hughes; his brothers George Hughes Jr., Sherman Hughes, and Jerry Hughes; and his niece Shardai Renee Lee Hughes.
Arthur’s family will continue to cherish his memory, knowing each moment they had with him lives on in their hearts. He leaves to mourn: his sons Marcus and Charles of Chicago, Illinois; daughters Gwen (Tony) McDade, Levita Heath, and Artha Heath; grandchildren Nautica Walker, Niylah McDade, Tony McDade III, Nzariya McDade, Simone Leflore, Sade’ Leflore, and Devonsha Thompson; his sisters Shirley (Rocky) Stone and Darlene Hughes; brothers Dolphus Hughes and Lawrence Hughes; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. Arthur will truly be missed.
