Barbara R. Dokes

Barbara McCoy Dokes, affectionately known as Barb, was born on July 24, 1958, in Wilmar, AR, USA, and resided in South Bend, Indiana for 48 years. She was a humble woman who led a life of service, dedicating to over 35 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), before retiring. Her loving and smart nature was evident in her work, caring for those in need. Barbara was a pillar of strength in her family; a reliable presence whose love and support were the bedrock upon which her family thrived.

Barbara was married to her beloved husband, James Dokes on September 10, 1977. Together, they built a beautiful family that includes their children: Melvin (Sarah), Bernale (Becky), James Jr. (Errin), and Belinda. She was a doting grandmother to Bernale Jr., James III, Jacelia, Justine, Julius, Matthew Jr., Miles, Mason, Maddox and a great-grandmother to A'Mir Hardiman. Barbara's siblings Monica, Milton, Randy, Rodney, and Marvin will always remember their sister's unwavering love and kindness. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Hosea and Bernice McCoy, and her siblings Melvin McCoy and Belinda Moore.

Barbara was a devout woman, her relationship with God was the guiding light in her life. Her family, both immediate and extended, were her pride and joy, and she considered it her mission to help people as they passed her way. Barbara's legacy is one of love, faith, and service; an enduring testament to a life beautifully lived.

A visitation for Barbara Dokes will be held on Wednesday, 06 May 2026 at 10:00amEDT at Laymen Chapel CME Church located at 303 South Kenmore Street, South Bend, Indiana, 46619. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00amEDT at the same location. We invite all who knew and loved Barbara to join us in honoring her memory.
