Bessie Dumas Obituary

Bessie Lee Dumas took her place in Glory on Wednesday August 28, 2024 at Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness. The angels were sent to cover her as the father himself whispered in her ear “come home and rest”.

Despite the endurance of pain and suffering she “yet” held firm to her faith and his unchanging hands. “She has fought a good fight, she has finished her course, and she kept the faith!” Bessie was a faithful member of the Calvary Praise and Worship Center C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Pastor Frank D. Andrews, where she served faithfully as her health would allow.

Bessie Lee Dumas was born August 18, 1949 in Shiloh, Alabama to the union of Robert Lee Dumas and Bessie Pearl (Hackworth) Dumas. She was the eldest of six siblings, as a child, Bessie loved to “read”, she would spend hours sitting in a corner reading any and everything she could get her hands on, and that passion for “books” continued throughout her life. Bessie was a graduate of North Division High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where upon graduation she enlisted in the United States Armed Forces where she proudly served her nation! Sister Bessie worked in the field of nursing for over 40 years, until her retirement.

Bessie was preceded in death by her parents: Robert Lee and Bessie Pearl Dumas, Sister Annette D. Watson, and a granddaughter Trinity Harris. She leaves to cherish her memories Gina Hackworth and Crystal (Chris Sr.) Harris both of Elkhart, IN, three grandchildren: Christiana Harris, Christopher Harris, Jr., and Crystenn Harris all of Elkhart, IN. Sisters Barbara (Frank) Andrews, and Lisa Conner, both of Elkhart, IN. Brothers Robert D. Dumas and Don Dumas both of Racine, Wisconsin, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
