A JOURNEY OF LOVE
Betty Jean Carter, 83, of South Bend, Indiana, departed her earthly life on Sunday, May 15, 2022, at her home. Betty was born on September 15, 1938, in Como, Mississippi, to TupWilbourn and Sallie Mae White.
Betty was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was always willing to provide a helping hand to others. She loved everyone and over the years developed a passion to fellowship and minister to those in need (friends, church family, neighbors and strangers as well).
Betty was a faithful member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years. She sang in the choir in her early years. Betty participated in the March rally fundraiser; and most recently enjoyed serving with the food pantry on Wednesdays at the church.
Betty worked at several places over the years, sometimes holding two and three jobs at a time. She was employed at Greyhound bus station for over 30 years. Betty was also an entrepreneur. She opened several businesses throughout her lifetime to include a cleaning company, The Eagle Inn, and a laundromat. She also worked as a caregiver for Help at Home. She worked for the St. Joseph County jail as a cook for 10 years before retiring in 2016.
Betty’s hobbies included shopping, gardening and fishing.
Family meant everything to her. Betty leaves to cherish her memory her son Lee and his wife- Jacqueline Carter of Peoria IL; daughter - Darlene Carter of South Bend, IN; and son -Glenn Carter of Atlanta, GA; 12 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one sister, Alice Wilbourn of Memphis, TN. A special recognition to grandson, Antonio Carter, whom she helped raise. Betty shared a special relationship with all of her nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by parents and sisters Robert “Bob” Kelly, Mary Christine “Chris” Jackson, Marie Clara Alexander, Afrann “Rose” Wilbourn, Effie Mae Williams, Mattie Wilbourn, Sarah Wilbourn, and Lula Bell Irvin.
Betty had a special place in our hearts and will truly be missed by all.
Services will be held on Monday May 23, 2022, 12 Noon at St John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend, Indiana 46628. Visitation will be held at 11 A.M at the church. Reverend Andre' A. McGhee will bring the word. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, 2257 Portage Ave., South Bend, Indiana 46616. Alford's Mortuary Inc. has been entrusted with arrangements.
