In Loving Memory of Betty Ann Smith

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Betty Ann Smith, who left us peacefully on February 1, 2025, at 87. Betty was born on May 13, 1937, in Indianapolis, IN, she is the beloved daughter of Laura Ruby Woodard. She grew up surrounded by a loving family that shaped her into the remarkable woman she became.
Betty lived a life full of love, kindness, and devotion. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was predeceased by her husband Murphy Smith, her sons Hakim Muhammad Sr. Sharif Muhammad, Her mother Laura Ruby Woodard, her brothers Robert James Woodard, and John Wesley Woodard Jr.
She is survived by her brothers Donald Lee Woodard, Ronald Dewayne Woodard De Armond, and Willam Matthew Plump. Her grandchildren Al-Nisa (Dannie) Flowers, Mumin (Shalana Williams) Muhammad, Kamilah Wingfield, Naim Muhammad, Nicole (Marcus) Galloway, Hakim (Toni) Muhammad Jr, Jameel Muhammad, Safiya Muhammad, Faheem Howell, Sharif Howell, Fatimah Howell, Latifah Muhammad, Ayesha Walker. Her nieces and nephews Robert J. Woodard, Albert Woodard, Eneitra M. Beattie, Charra N. Woodard, Najah Rasheedah Monroe, William M. Plump Jr., Phillip Plump, Lisa Plump, and Raphael Plump. 20 great grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. A host of other family members and friends will miss her deeply.
Known for her warm heart and nurturing spirit, Betty touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Her dedication to her family was unwavering, and she found great joy in life's simple pleasures, in spending quality time with loved ones. Betty’s laughter and gentle wisdom will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Betty will always be remembered for her love and devotion, and her memory will live on in the people who loved her.
To honor and remember Betty, a Celebration of Life will be held at Alford's Mortuary Chapel, located at 1222 Napier Street, South Bend, Indiana, 46601, on Friday, February 14, 2025, viewing will commence at 12 p.m. noon and service will begin at 1:00pm EST.
