Betty J. Trotter affectionately known as “Toni”, was born November 9, 1935, in Jackson, Tennessee to the union of Rush and Cassie Strayhon-Darnell.
Betty received her formal education in the Milwaukee public school system and attended MATC where she became a licensed barber.
Betty united in holy matrimony to Levi Trotter, Jr., November 10, 1973.
In 1957, Betty came to South Bend and was an employee of Newbill’s Barbershop and Deluxe Barbershop, before opening her own barbershop. After many years of barbering, Betty decided to open a retail store. The store specialized in women’s clothing and accessories, and men’s hats and shoes. Betty was blessed in all her business endeavors.
Betty loved the Lord; after moving to South Bend, Betty united with Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated member until her health declined. Betty loved to sing and gave many concerts at the church. She sang in the Senior Choir, the Sanctuary Choir and was the director of the Go Down Moses Choir. Betty was also a member of the Missionary Society, taught Sunday School, was a Deaconess, and was the church’s Financial Secretary for many years.
Betty departed this life on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 12:40 p.m. Betty was preceded in death by her parents Rush and Cassie Strayhon-Darnell, one brother L.C. Darnell, and half-sister Sylvia Flakes.
Betty leaves to celebrate her life; husband Levi Trotter Jr., son David Tesla Darnell, two grandchildren David Scott Darnell and Lacrisha Darnell, three great grandchildren Taylor Darnell, Alaysia Darnell and Aniyah Darnell. Special children Jacquelyn Wright, Larry (Linda) Trotter, Valerie Mallard, Christopher (Sheree) Dickson, Linda Chanis, Michelle Snelling and Patty Snelling as well as her God Son and Daughter Jerry and Bonnie Willis, along with other special grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
