C. Raymond Wallace Obituary

Clarence Raymond Wallace was peacefully transitioned into heavenly life on June 1, 2021. 'Raymond,' as he was fondly known, was a resident at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross for the past year during which time he was rehabbing due to Parkinson’s.

Raymond was born to the late Pasco and Beatrice Wallace in South Bend, Indiana on September 4, 1940. He graduated from South Bend Central High in 1959. After which, he attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. In 1969, he was gainfully employed at WSBT where he developed his passion for photography. At WSBT, he was the first African American hired full-time in the news department. In his search for new rewards, he left WSBT in 1976 moving to Chicago and New York City for two and a half years before landing in the San Francisco Bay area for seven years, which he loved. His love for history and politics took him to be a successful campaign manager for Bernard White’s seat in the Indiana State Legislature. Raymond retired from the South Bend Community Schools as a bus driver in 2007. He continued driving as Dial-a-Ride in Niles, Michigan and transporting mobile homes throughout the U.S. prior to total retirement. Also, he was very proud of being a Prince Hall Mason.

Raymond accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member at Olivet A.M.E. Church in South Bend before his health started to decline. However, during those years at Olivet, he sang in the choir, the Choral Aires (which was a vocal group in the church), and served as a church Trustee. He brought his oratorical skills of poetry and public speaking to many people’s joy.

Raymond leaves to mourn his passing, Larry (Sue) Smothers [cousin] South Bend and Troy Kent Ross [cousin] of South Lyon. Michigan; Marie Robinson [stepdaughter] South Bend; Petranya Boykins [niece] Vallejo, California, Lyletta Robinson of Chicago, Illinois; and several family members and friends that will truly miss him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Olivet A.M.E. Church in Raymond Wallace’s memory.
