Mr. Carl Anthony Mathis Sr. was born on November 9, 1972 in Gary, IN. to Jean Mathis Maxfield.
Carl was a 1990 graduate of Oceanside High School in Oceanside, CA. His unique love of sports started at an early age. He began playing for the Eastside Little League baseball team when he was twelve. His love of baseball and athleticism earned him a spot in the minor leagues, but he chose a different path in life. Carl was a well-rounded athlete and he excelled in many different areas in sports. During his high school years, he was well known as “Big Dog” on the football field and basketball court. His competitive nature transitioned from real-life sports to video games. Playstation gaming was his favorite pastime.
We fondly remember Carl as being a single father that loved his children whole heartedly, and was loved unconditionally by them. His love for his family was unmatched, but he and his Auntie Pat shared a special bond that went beyond aunt and nephew. Carl also shared an amazing friendship with his best friend John.
On November 13, 2022 Carl transitioned to his eternal life. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Willie and Mary Mathis.
He leaves to cherish his memory two children De’zaray Mathis and Carl Mathis II of South Bend, his mother; Jean Maxfield of South Bend, three brothers Jermaine and Marcus Maxfield of South Bend and Tywan Maxfield of Melbourne, FL, and one sister Tamika Hagwood of Memphis, TN. Six nieces, three nephews, and numerous relatives and friends.
