David Dexter Smith

DAVID DEXTER SMITH SR., born on the 3rd of December, 1967, in Los Angeles, CA, was a man of many names and many more qualities. Known affectionately as "Meat Man," "LA," "Super Dave," and "Freaky Dave," he was a beacon of ambition, loyalty, humility, and dedication. He would often say, "The only way to do great work is to love what you do," and this mantra was evident in his life.

David was a master Mason who laid bricks with precision and pride for over two decades. His retirement in 2020 marked a shift from his professional life to a focus on his beloved family and community in South Bend, Indiana. His former residences in California and South Carolina never erased the love he held for his birthplace, Los Angeles, but it was in South Bend where he spent 25 years of his life, creating lasting memories and building a legacy with his family. 

David was the proud father of eight: Kwanzaa, Ebony Togafau, Angel, Elisia, Ericka, Daviana, David Jr., and Deja. Each of his children knew his love equally and profoundly. He was also a beloved brother to his two sisters Janae Fountain and Danette Smith and one brother Reginald Smith Jr. His life was further enriched by his granddaughter, Katalina, and grandson, Kayson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thelma Holt and Reginald Smith, and his brother, Earl Fountain.

A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at 12:00 pm EST at Alford’s Mortuary, 1222 Napier Street, South Bend, Indiana, 46601.
