In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 27, 2024, surrounded by dear loved ones, Deacon Archie Lee Winston made his departure from this earthly life.
He made his earthly arrival to this life on September 11, 1946, in Paulette, Mississippi, to his parents, Jessie Lee Winston and Caroline (Johnson) Shiver. He attended McComb High School from 1960 – 1964, graduating in 1964. After moving to South Bend, Indiana, he was employed by AM General as a shortage clerk, from September 3, 1968, until his retirement on July 31, 2003. He was also employed by Alfords’s Mortuary for a number of years.
On July 26, 1969, he and Martha Wardlow were united in wedlock.
Deacon Winston was a member of Pentecostal Cathedral COGIC, where he served as Superintendent of Sunday School. He had a deep love for his mother, “Ma Dear.” Among his favorite things were gardening, fishing, traveling, watching Notre Dame and Chicago Bears football, watching, and coaching his sons and grandchildren. He also liked to play baseball, football, and basketball.
Deacon Winston has left behind to mourn his loss, his devoted wife, Martha; sons, Demetrius Winston, Thomas Winston, Cartell Winston, all of South Bend, William (Brenda) Winston of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Terrance Winston of Texas, Robert Jordan of South Bend, and Carlie Winston of Avondale, Arizona; daughters, Cardia Winston, Issanae Bailey, and Breona Winston, all of South Bend, Indiana; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; his mother, Caroline of Detroit, Michigan; step-mother, Diane Winston of South Bend, Indiana; sisters, Mary (J.D.) Battles of Detroit, Michigan, Nancy (Ced) Montgomery of St. Louis, Missouri, and Danisha Lane of South Bend, Indiana; brothers, Michael Winston, and Jessie Winston Jr., both of St. Louis, Missouri, step-brothers, Derrick Lane, Dennis Land, and Dron Lane, all of South Bend, Indiana; many nieces and nephews; a special friend, Fred Jeter.
Preceding him in death was a daughter, Cathy Jones; grandson, Xavier Winston; great-great- granddaughter, Iyla McCain; father, Jessie Winston; and brothers-in-law, Clyde Wardlow, R.C. Wardlow, and Wallace Wardlow.
The Home-going service for Deacon Winston will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Pentecostal Cathedral at 11:00 AM. Visitation is at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery.
