Elder Mitchell Davis
“The Maestro”
Elder Mitchell “Mickey” Davis was born on August 21, 1948, in South Bend, Indiana, to Deacon Jonathan Davis, Sr., and Mother Lucille Davis. He was a rambunctious child, never wanting to sit still. His father would have to pin his diaper to the bed sheet for him to stay in one place. This trait continued throughout his entire life.
Mickey was reared by his parents in a Christian home and was a member of Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ, where he accepted Christ at the early age of eight years old. In July 1973, Elder Davis was Ordained an Elder in the Church of God in Christ by the late Bishop C. E. Bennett. He later became a member of Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Bishop Donald L. Alford, Sr. His love for God was immeasurable!
He received his formal education at Benjamin Harrison Elementary School and Washington High School, where he excelled in track. Elder Davis also served in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Air Medal. After serving in the Army, Elder Davis was employed by the United States Postal Service, from which he retired.
Elder Davis’s ministry of music was birthed at the age of eleven when he began playing the piano. His parents sent him to the South Bend Conservatory of Music, but he was bored. Elder Davis was so gifted that he could play the music placed in front of him by ear and would not need to read the notes. This resulted in a few taps with the ruler from his instructor. His mentors were Mrs. Abbey Johnson Wallace, Mrs. Janice Alford Marable, and Mrs. Virginia Spann. At the age of thirteen, he began playing for the Mass Choir of Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ. He later went on to serve as Minister of Music at various churches: Saints Memorial Church of God in Christ, Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ, Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, and lastly, Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, all in South Bend, Indiana. He also served at Testimonial Church of God in Christ, Los Angeles, California, and at the Berean Seventh-Day Adventist Church, South Bend, Indiana. In addition, he served as Director of Education at Hatchett’s Temple Church of God in Christ, Michigan City, Indiana.
Not only was Elder Davis a skillful musician, but he was also part of The Davis Trio. He has shared his ministry of music with the Michiana area, and throughout the United States, for over 60 years. His dedication and commitment to God was evident in his humble and willing spirit to assist whenever, and wherever, needed. Elder Davis was one of the most gifted and anointed musicians of our day. His music has ushered in the anointing of God in church services, soothed those in sorrow and set the atmosphere for many weddings and special occasions.
His greatest joy was the blessing of family. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and cherished family member. We will never forget his genuine love and care. And, yes, his sense of humor was unmatched!
Elder Davis leaves to cherish his memory his Children, Michele (Pastor Travis) Bush, Anaheim, California, Pastor Michael (Danielle) Davis, Inglewood, California, and Megan Fowlkes, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Grandchildren, Karsten, Kristen, Travis, Jr., Mackenzie, Skylar, and Morgan; Siblings, Jonathan (Denise) Davis, Jr., Beverly Johnson, and Kathy (Elder Leonard) Brown; Former wife, and mother of his children, Vernell Davis, along with a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
