The Johnson family lost the matriarch of their family when Eurla (Hicks) Johnson was called home on Wednesday, February 17th, 2021. She was surrounded by family in her home in South Bend, Indiana.
Eurla was born May 24, 1924, to Minnie and Fred Hicks. She had 3 siblings; Willie Lee, William (Bill), and her sister, Bessie (Sis). She got the name Bae Bae, because her brother Bill could not pronounce her name. Eurla lost her mother at a young age and the family moved to Memphis.
Eurla met James Johnson in 1940 and they married in1942. In 1947, they moved to South Bend, Indiana and they had 4 beautiful children; Herbert Johnson, Alma (Johnson) Wynn, Terry Johnson (deceased), and Tonya (Tyrone) Robinson. She worked as a Cook at Cardinal Meridian and retired in the 1970s and she was employed as an Educator for Logan until she retired in 1991. That same year, she opened a daycare “Johnson’s Little People of the Future”.
Eurla was preceded in death by her parents; Fred and Minnie Hicks, husband; James Johnson, two brothers; Lee and Bill Hicks, one sister; Bessie, and one son; Terry Johnson. She is survived by three children; Herbert Johnson, Alma Wynn, and Tonya (Tyrone) Robinson, 25 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren
She always had a warm smile and a word of encouragement for anyone who needed to hear it. Her greatest impact was the love she had for her family. She loved people, especially the kids, and regularly adopted people into the family. She enjoyed cooking good meals, sharing laughs and jokes, traveling near and far, watching movies, and music. Her favorite rapper was 50 Cent. She will be remembered as a fair and loving mother and confidant. The family will forever cherish her home-cooked meals, style, sense of humor, storytelling, and generosity.
