Garland Castleberry Obituary

Garland Edward Castleberry Jr., affectionately known as “Bey”, “Uncle Egg”, “June”, “Mr. Miagi”, “Poopie”, and ultimately “Mr. Garland”, was born on April 20, 1956, in South Bend, IN.  His life was a wealth of stories, laughter, and love, all of which are a testament to his compassionate, reliable, and generous nature.  For 67 years, Garland graced South Bend with his presence, imbuing it with the warmth of his spirit and the richness of his character.

Garland's love story began on August 16, 1989, when he married the love of his life, Dora Scott.  Over the next 34 years together, they forged a life filled with love, shared dreams, and mutual respect.  Garland was known as a stalwart of reliability in his professional life, serving as a Fed Ex delivery driver for 37 years before his retirement. His dedication to his work, made him “more than just a delivery driver” per the customers he served.  An avid sports fan, Garland could often be found cheering on the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls, a passion only rivaled by his love for cooking, especially his famous cheesy eggs and grits. If you were really special, you can testify to the greatness of his lemon pie!

While he was many things, it was his role as a family man that Garland held most dear.  He was a loving husband, a cherished father, a doting grandfather, the most excited of great grandfathers, an unforgettable brother and an uncle that far exceeded the expectations of what an uncle should be.  If you’ve been around long enough, you may have heard stories of how he played dress up with his niece Tamara.  When she was done, “Uncle Egg’s” nails were painted, and his face was beat!

Garland leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. He is survived by his wife, Dora Scott; his sons, William Castleberry (Lutia) and William Murphy (Angelina).  Grandchildren Martell Lax, William, Raelyn, Khaleel, Nina, Chase, Taya, and Michael Murphy, Ameliya and Kai Penman, Essence Williams, and Demetrius Cook; his siblings Delores Howard (Pastor Joe Howard), Lionel Turner (Kelly), Katherine (Anibal) Cintron, Bobbi Turner, Clifford (Theresa) Maddox and Lee Maddox.  In-laws Randolph (Malinda) Scott, Beverly Scott, and Myra Scott; a special cousin, John Wilson.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Rose Turner, and Garland Castleberry Sr. (Helen), his grandparents Deacon William Wilson (Alice), mother-in-law Evelyn Scott, father-in-law William Scott, daughter Eshawna Cook, great-niece Jasmine Smith, nephew Calvin Johnson, brother-in-law Clifford Kilgore, sister-in-law Shirley Wray Williams.  Fur babies proceeding him in death include Spook “Little Rabbit” Castleberry and Chloe Elaine Castleberry, AKA White girl.

We invite you to share your memories of Garland, to upload photos that capture his spirit, and to celebrate the life of a man whose heart was as big as his smile. His life was a testament to the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Garland succeeded, and he did so with grace, humor, and an unwavering love.
