Mr. George H. Hawkins, 79, of South Bend, Indiana, fought a good fight, He kept the faith and finished the course. He departed this life on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, Indiana.
He was a loving son, brother, father, husband, and grandfather. The fourth son of eleven brothers and sisters.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, to Jake and Ruby Mae (Haggard) Hawkins, on June 24, 1940. The family later relocated to Kingsford Heights, Indiana, and then to LaPorte, Indiana, where he attended Union Township School and LaPorte High School. He obtained a job at Kingsley’s Furniture Company as a Top Furniture Maker and Upholster for 30 years. He retired and moved to Michigan City, Indiana. There he became a security guard. Upon visiting Soutoh Bend, Indiana, in 1978 he decided to relocate there where he met Bernice Williams whom he fell in love with and later married.
George was very outgoing, met no strangers and was a good conversationalist. He loved people and his family. While in Memorial Hospital he accepted Christ as his personal saviour under the watch of Pastor Kevin Adams.
George leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 38 years; Bernice Hawkins, five sons; Charles (Faye) Kelley of Seattle, Washington, Timothy R. (Lynette) Kelley of Michigan City, Indiana, Vincent (Penny) Hawkins, Kenneth (Rachel) Hilton and Jerderrick Williams all of South Bend, Indiana, three daughters; Angelia (Damon) Carlisle of Sahuuarita, Arizona, Patricia (Recardo) Davidson of Odenton, Maryland, and Latonya (Jeff) Watson of South Bend, Indiana, two brothers; Edwin (Janika) Hawkins of Michigan City, Indiana, and Kenneth Hawkins of Dallas, Texas, three sisters; Patricia B. Herron of South Bend, Indiana, Eleanor Henderson and Diane Hawkins both of Dallas, Texas, 28 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, a very special friend; Larry Evans.
George was preceded in death by his parents; Jake and Ruby Hawkins, five brothers; Jake, Thomas, Joe, Welch and Sydney Ray Hawkins.
