Hazel Coleman, 84, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully at 6:45 AM on January 21, 2025, at Greenleaf Health Campus.
Born on September 15, 1940, in Hughes, Arkansas, to Jessie and Hattie Coleman, Hazel accepted Christ at an early age and dedicated her life to her faith and family. She was a longtime member of Canaan Baptist Church in Elkhart, Indiana, under the leadership of Reverend Theodis Hadley and Pastor McNeal Stewart III. Most recently, she was a devoted member of New Vision of Life Church under Pastor Marvin T. Pace Sr.
Hazel’s love for God was evident through her involvement in the T. Hadley Choir, where she found joy in singing and praising the Lord. She also served in the church kitchen, embodying her passion for cooking and hospitality. Additionally, Hazel spent many years traveling the world to attend church conventions, a journey that enriched her faith and allowed her to connect with others around the globe. In addition to her service in the church, Hazel worked as a cook at Fountain View for several years. She later retired from Amerimax at the age of 62 after working there for over 20 years as a general labor worker.
Known for her warm personality and love of family, Hazel was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her five children: Terry (Ann) Coleman, Artrenna Mullens, Michelle (Talmadge) Whitehead, Willie (Stephanie) Coleman, and Jocelyn Coleman; one daughter-niece, Regina (Kim) Fultes; 12 grandchildren: Terrence Coleman, Edward Cottner, DeAndre’ Coleman, Adrien Coleman, Anthony Johnson, DuWhan Alford, Trisha Ruff, Paris Ruff, Jeremiah Coleman, Jonathan Coleman, Jaylen Washington, and Jayla Washington; and two great-grandchildren: Jaryn Cottner and DeMari’ Coleman.
She is also survived by her five siblings: Robert (Ann) Coleman, Hattie (Roger) Redmond, Jeanette Robinson, Larry Coleman, and Lefuarn Harvey. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Hattie Coleman, and her siblings: Ruby Driver, Odessa White, Bernice Benman, Evel Glass, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Hazel enjoyed cooking and was well-known for her delicious greens, dressing, caramel cake, and Texas cake. She also loved doing word searches, talking with fellow seniors, and watching her favorite television shows, including The Price Is Right, Let's Make a Deal, Wheel of Fortune, and Murder, She Wrote.
Hazel will be remembered as a woman of deep faith, unwavering love, and an infectious spirit that brought joy to everyone around her. Her family will forever cherish her guidance, wisdom, and the beautiful memories she created with them.
A celebration of Hazel’s life will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at New Vision of Life Church, located at 400 West Mishawaka Rd., Elkhart, IN. Viewing will begin at 11:00 AM, with the service starting promptly at 12:00 PM. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
