James R. Robison, affectionately known as “Chelle,” passed away on May 2, 2026, at the age of 70. He was born on January 2, 1956, in South Bend, Indiana, to Marie E. Smith and James E. Robison.
Chelle was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in South Bend, where he was an outstanding student-athlete. He excelled both academically and athletically, earning an athletic scholarship to play football at Indiana State University.
Later in life, he began his career as a commercial truck driver, a profession he enjoyed for more than 30 years. Chelle had a deep love for adventure and spent much of his time exploring the open roads across the continental United States. He was an avid music listener who appreciated a wide variety of genres.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. Robison and Marie E. Robison, and his brother, Willie T. Gillespie.
James R. Robison will be remembered by his three children: Angela Blake (Brian), Aja, and his stepson, Anthony “Tony” Boykins (Yanita); his sisters, Gwen Copeland (Dennis) and Charmaine Powell; along with loving nephews, nieces, extended family members, and close friends who will cherish his memory.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend, Indiana 46628, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m.
