Mr. John Douglas Hairston, known lovingly as "J.D", was born on a warm summer day, July 1, 1942, in Michigan City, Indiana. He was a beacon of strength, perseverance, and dedication, embodying the quote, "The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary," by Vidal Sassoon. John passed away on October 20, 2024, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to have known him.
John was a proud graduate of Isaac C. Elston, Sr. High School, class of 1962. His love for the open road led him to a long and successful career in trucking. He held a Class A & B CDL license and was an Over-The-Road Truck Driver and extruder operator for Mastic Corporation. John's dedication to safety and professionalism was recognized multiple times throughout his career. He was awarded the Safe Driver Award in 2004 and was named Driver of the Month in February 2005 for Roadlink USA. Moreover, he was the recipient of three Safe Driver's Awards from Triton Transportation. His awards are a testament to his unwavering commitment to his profession. John's life was not only defined by his professional achievements but also his personal relationships.
He was a loving husband to Rosie Hairston, whom he married on April 27, 1991. His love extended to Versia Hairston, the mother of his children, and their children Jennetta, Jennine, Janita, Jenelle, and John (Marie) Hairston III. A beloved stepfather to Haven (Trina), Antonia (Tutt), -Kimani. He was the cherished brother of Doris Prince and Tommy (Donna) Hairston, and the beloved nephew of Ophelia Taylor. Along with a host of Grand, Great Grand Children, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Viola Hairston, and his siblings Willie Harmon, Adolphus Jr., William Rhines, Mary Blakely, and Martha Hairston.
John's Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 1:00pm EDT at Alford's Mortuary, 1222 Napier Street, South Bend, Indiana.
