Julia L. Johnson was born on October 16, 1971, to the union of Joe and Delores Howard in South Bend, Indiana. She passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026; she was 54 years of age.
Julia received her early education at Stanley Clark School, a private school in South Bend. She later graduated from the former Clay High School in 1990. Julia was an intellectual; being smart, witty and a lover of facts and knowledge, she would often make sure that others understood the correct spelling, pronunciation and word meanings. Her older sisters Gloria and Debbie taught her how to read; and when she was in Head Start, she was invited to read to the kindergarten class. Julia also had a love for people and helping others, so much so, that she received her certificate from IVY Tech Community College in the field of phlebotomy. She loved working at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana. Anyone who saw her working there, would see her with a smile on her face, and knew she had a love for the patients!
In March of 1998, Julia was united in marriage to Royal Johnson Sr. in South Bend. Julia leaves to cherish her memory her beautiful children, Justin Smith, Jurrell (Britley) Smith, Jordan Smith, all of South Bend; Royal Johnson Jr., Philandis Johnson, and DeJoyah Johnson all of Elkhart, Indiana; 14 grandchildren; her siblings, Andrew (Kelli) Howard of South Bend; Gloria (Lorenzo Sr.) Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Deborah Eason of Matteson, Illinois; Lisa (Martin) Eaton of Indianapolis, Indiana; and Christina Howard of Albany, Georgia. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Julia was preceded in death by her precious daughter, Jasmine Smith and by her father, Superintendent Joe W. Howard.
On any given Sunday, you could hear her singing a couple of her favorite songs, I Shall Never Let Go of His Hand and The Alabaster Box.
Our sister, daughter, mother and friend will truly be missed by many.
Such a short time — but you made such an impression on earth, but a moment in memory forever. By Deborah Eason.
