Mr. L.J. Groves, 78, departed this life in the arms of Jesus on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in St, Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, IN.
L.J. was born to the union of the late J.D and JoElla (Guyton) Groves on August 29, 1946, in Millport, Alabama. In 1957 he relocated to South Bend, IN with his parents and siblings. L.J. received his formal education within the South Bend Community School System. L.J. worked for O'Brien Paint, A.M General and Steel warehouse where he remained for decades until his retirement. He also laid carpet for many churches and businesses within the Michiana area for over 20 years. L.J. enjoyed listening to the blues and gospel music on his old-school record player/radio. He would stimulate his mind by doing biblical word search puzzles. Outdoors was his favorite place to be whether he was planting a garden, cutting grass, fishing or washing his cars. L.J. was the family historian and would sit and talk for hours about "down south" and the southeast side with family and friends. One of the things he was most proud of is being one of the founding members of the group that started the "Southeast Side Reunion Era" which in turn led to the other areas in South Bend to establish their own reunions.
L.J. was baptized at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in 1981 where he confessed his love for the Lord. His faith deepened as he grew older. He would often testify about the importance of repenting for your sins. He was fully committed when he went home to be with the Lord.
L.J. leaves to cherish and share his loving memories one brother; Leon Groves, Sr.; three sisters, Clara Kyle, Rev. Dorothy Groves-Kirkendoll, and Charlene Groves all of South Bend, IN. The Lord has truly blessed L.J. with a magnitude of family and friends that will forever miss him. L.J. was preceded in death by his parents, J.D. and JoElla (Guyton) Groves, two brothers; Hosie (Pete) Groves and Daniel Groves, Sr. Four nephews Delano Groves, Jaron Groves, Reginald Peterson and Carl Shelton-Groves. One great nephew Jason K. Lottie and one great niece, Chri'shia Peterson. We at this time weep, but we also rejoice, for the loving spirit that visited here with us seventy-eight years.
