“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15
It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Luverta Groves, announce her peaceful transition on the 20th of September 2024. Known affectionately as Jert or Lu by her close friends and family, Luverta was born on December 13, 1941, in Springfield, Georgia. She was the beloved daughter of the late Lonnie and Vinnie Dillard. Continuing to cherish her memory is her Sister Irene (Raymond) Cox.
Preceded in her death are Five Sisters, and Two Brothers. Her journey of life was an inspiring one, filled with love, courage, and a sprinkle of her unique sense of humor. Luverta was a beacon of light, her laughter and warmth illuminating the lives of everyone she touched. We have been remarkably blessed to have shared in her journey.
Luverta was a woman of many talents and interests. Her career as a Teacher's Assistant at Head Start and a Kitchen Assistant at South Bend Community School Corporation were a testament to her nurturing spirit and her commitment to serving others. Luverta was a talented seamstress and an expert in crochet. Whether she was creating a beautiful garment or a delicacy in the kitchen, her hands were always a source of magic. Her enjoyment of seafood dishes was the stuff of legend, as was her infectious laughter and her endless supply of encouragement - the kind that only a woman of her courage and wisdom could provide. As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart." And that's what Luverta was - the best and most beautiful thing in our hearts.
Beyond her personal passions, Luverta was an active participant in her community. She was a proud member of the St. Paul Bowling League, Usher Board, and Choir as well as the King Center Women’s Club. But it was her family that mattered most to Luverta. She was married to the late Mr. Marvin Jenkins to their union five children were born. She was the devoted and loving mother of Patrick Dillard, Elaine (Gregory) Mitchem, Tammy D. Jenkins, Marvin S. Jenkins, Libby D. (Sean) Lott, and Reginald Jenkins. She also leaves to cherish her memories Fifteen Grand Children, Twenty-Six Great Grand Children, and One Great-Great Grand Child. On November 17,1984 she married the late Anderson Groves.
Luverta's homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 11:00am EDT at St Paul Bethel Baptist Church, 621 Lindsey Street, South Bend, Indiana. We invite all who were touched by Luverta's inspiring, loving, and courageous spirit to join us in celebrating her remarkable life.
In honor of Luverta, we encourage friends and family to leave memories and upload photos to her memorial page. Let's commemorate the wonderful moments we shared with her and keep her spirit alive in our hearts forever.
