Margaret Rebecca Winston

Margaret Rebecca Winston passed away peacefully on October 26, 2022 at the age of 74.  She was born on June 15, 1948 in Jackson TN to James Robert and Lucretia (Jones) Winston.

 As a youngster, the family moved to South Bend, Indiana.  After graduating from James Whitcomb Riley High School, she attended Tennessee State University where she pledged Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.  She then was employed by Workforce Development Service of St. Joseph County for several decades before working in the St. Joseph County Auditor’s Office, where she ended her working career. 

Margaret is survived by 2 daughters, Toni Flowers (Elana Betts), of Coatesville, PA and Allysa Winston (Paul Boyd III), of Mishawaka, IN; grandmother to Paul Boyd IV of  Mishawaka IN; sisters Evetta Trice, Mary Ann Norman, Joyce Winston, all of South Bend, Gail L Ashley (Willie) of Tyrone, Atlanta, brother John I Winston (Peggy) of South Bend; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.  She was preceded in death by parents James and Lucretia Winston; six siblings: Roylee Winston, Robert James Winston, Pearline Theus, LueWillie Chatman, Ernestine Shivers, and Rose White.

Margaret was an avid reader and loved doing jigsaw puzzles.  She also loved baking and sewing.  She was always willing to help others whether it was being to team mother for her daughters’ softball teams, fixing a zipper on a jacket, or doing someone’s taxes. She always worked the election polls and taught her daughters the importance of making their voices heard.

Services for Mother Winston will be held on Friday November 4, 2022, 1 PM in the Chapel of Alford’s Mortuary, 1222 Napier Street, South Bend, Indiana 46601. Prophet Jeff Diggins of Believers Church Of God In Christ will bring the word. Friends may visit with the family an hour prior. Arrangements have been entrusted with Alford’s Mortuary.
