With a heavy heart, we announce the passing of Rev. Robert Joe Sheppard, known affectionately as Bobby or Shep, on June 1, 2025. Born on May 8, 1947, in Elkhart, IN, Rev. Robert lived a spirited and fulfilled life, touching many hearts with his charismatic personality. A funny and loving man, he was an ordained minister who devoted his life to the Baptist church and its teachings.
Rev. Robert's early journey with faith began in his childhood at Canaan Baptist Church in Elkhart, Indiana. His passion and devotion for spreading the word of God led him to become an ordained minister at St. Paul Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He then served with love and dedication as the Pastor of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and ended his ministry at Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church. His unwavering faith was an inspiration to all, and he embodied the verse, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matthew 5:16).
Apart from his religious involvement, Rev. Robert was also known for his love for old westerns, fishing, and dog training. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren, Kielan and Geniah, who were his world. He enjoyed singing with his family and in the church, and his infectious laughter and warm heart will be deeply missed. Rev. Robert is survived by his sisters Barbara Grayson and Betty Phelps; brothers Kevin and Michael Sheppard; children Robert and Gabrielle Sheppard, and Celeste Cuffie. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Sheppard; sister, Lois Sheppard-Haynes; and father and brother, Florida Sheppard and Florida Jr.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. EDT at Greater St John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 North Adams Street, South Bend, Indiana, 46628. The Celebration of Life will follow at the same location at 12:00 p.m. EDT.
