Ruby L. Carothers

Mrs. Ruby Lee Carothers, 85, of South Bend, Indiana passed away on Saturday, April 17, 2021. Ruby was born July 9, 1935, in Oxford, Mississippi to the late Willis and Ozella Hibbler.

Ruby graduated from Oxford Training School (OTS) in Oxford, Mississippi in 1955. She continued her education at Central State University in Wilber Force, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics in 1959.

Ruby married Shirley “Chuck” Carothers on August 6, 1960, in South Bend, Indiana. They shared 61 wonderful years together. She was a stay-at-home Mom until 1975 when she began her career as a Dietician at Fountainview Nursing Home, retiring in 1998. Ruby was also a beloved member of Grace AME Zion Church for over 60 years and served faithfully as a missionary, choir member, and deaconess.

Ruby enjoyed serving the Lord in church; sewing; arts and crafts; traveling and spending time with family.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband, Shirley “Chuck” Carothers; her daughter, Paquita Brown; her son, Keilawn Carothers (Elsa Cazares); five grandchildren; her brother, Charlie Hibbler; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A sister, Sadie Fondren preceded her in death.
