Ruth Chester passed away peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, June 21st at 10:30 pm at BriarCliff Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was blessed with 92 beautiful years of life.
Ruth was born to the union of Henry Riley and Roxie Eddington on August 2, 1930 in Metcalfe, MS. In 1955, she relocated to the city of South Bend, IN, where she joined New Testament Missionary Baptist church 4 years later. Prior to joining New Testament, in 1959 she gave birth to her only begotten son, Ronald Bishop. Ron was her pride and joy. She made sure that he was raised in the church as she kept very busy with ministry. While at New Testament she wore many hats. As being a part of the Northwestern Indiana District Missionary Baptist Association, she was the president of the district nurses as well as the director of the starlight band. At New Testament directly, she was a Sunday school teacher, the secretary/announcing clerk, president and director of the choir, director of the sunshine band, director of the missionary society and the kitchen committee, just to name a few.
Ruth will be greatly missed. She will be mourned by her daughter-in-love, Patricia Bishop of South Bend, IN; a special niece, Geraldine Boyd of South Bend, IN; grandchildren, Caren Bishop of Indianapolis, IN, Corey (Allison) Bishop of New Paris, IN, Dominique Anderson, William Howell-Bey and August Howell-Bey all of South Bend, IN, Gemini Howell-Bey of Indianapolis, IN, and a host of great-grandchildren. Loved ones who preceded her in death include her parents, Henry Riley and Roxie Eddington; son, Elder Ronald Bishop; daughter, Minnie Howell-Bey; sisters, Irene Hobbs, Hattie Davis, and June Green. Services for Ruth Chester will be held at Pentecostal Cathedral Church of God in Christ, 1025 W. Western Avenue on July 1, 2023. Viewing is at 9 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10 a.m.
