Sanford Swanson

Mr. Sanford Yee Swanson aka Short Coat, who resided on West Washington Street, South Bend, Indiana departed this life on Monday, May 16, 2022 in his residence.

 Sanford Yee was born in Farrell, Pennsylvania on February 15, 1934 to James Atward and Bertha (Wright) Swanson.  Sanford attended Harrison Elementary School.  His employment included Kaiser Jeep/AM General where he served as foreman.  Also Century Center where he was a Curator in the Art Center.  In addition he did home reconditioning and remodeling until the age of 77, retiring in 2013.  He was an Airman in the United States Air Force.

 His activities were reading the Bible, reading the dictionary, playing Jeopardy, playing cards, he was a Bid Wiz genius, and loved bar-b-cuing.   

 In 1974, in South Bend, he and Betty Lee Settles were united in wedlock.

 Sanford’s survivors include a family of two daughters, Constance (Howard) Wolf and Dawn (Kevin) Tyler; four sons, Sanford Y. Swanson Sr., Donald Timothy Swanson, Darryn Atward Swanson and Ben Carr Swanson, all of South Bend, Indiana; stepchildren, Steve Driver of Chicago, Illinois, Cleveland Driver of South Bend, Indiana, Stephanie Driver of Michigan and Pearline Driver of South Bend, Indiana; 29 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Bertha Smith of South Bend. 

 He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lee; a son, Ricky Swanson; sisters, Pearl Swanson Williams, Sarah Swanson Curry and Gloria Swanson Tucker; and brothers, Benny Carr Swanson and Donald James Swanson.

 Services for Mr. Swanson will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., with viewing one hour prior to the service in the chapel of Alford’s Mortuary 1222 Napier Street, South Bend, IN 46601, where arrangements have been entrusted to.
