Vanessa Moorer Obituary

Vanessa B. Moorer was born on July 30, 1980 to Grace D. Slaughter and Harry E. Moorer, Sr.  Vanessa left this physical world unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 16, 2023. She made her confession to Christ at a young age.

Vanessa was 42 years old and affectionately known to her family and friends as Fufee.  Born in Chicago, Illinois and raised in South Bend, Indiana where she attended public schools. She also attended Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon returning to Illinois, she earned her GED and later attended Chicago Women in Trades School and graduated top of her class.

Vanessa was always a hard worker. She received her carpenter license and started working to create her own business.  She established Moorer Muscle Construction, LLC this year and had planned on conducting entrepreneurial construction-type work. She was also a self-taught tattoo artist.

Devoted to her family, Fufee sought and succeeded in making us proud of her. She was the life of all gatherings; there was not a dull moment when she was around. Vanessa’s smile lit up just about every room she entered. A sports enthusiast, Vanessa loved basketball and playing video games. She was exposed to soccer as a youth by retired South Bend Police Officer Derek Dieter. According to her mother, the early athletic experience exposed Fufee's desire to be the best. "Everyday she challenged herself to be better than she was the day before."

Vanessa was the baby of seven siblings. She leaves to cherish her memory her fur-babies, Simba and Leo; her mother,  Grace (Clarence) White; sisters, Callie Slaughter, Johnnie Moorer (Torrence) Chism, Anquinette Moorer, Carolyn Moorer, Michelle, Tamara Wilkes, Barbara  Carothers and Tonia Pujoe; brothers, Kevin (Kimberly) Slaughter, Harry Chege Moorer, Jr., and Andre Carothers. Also surviving are aunts, Daisy Moore, Faith, Sheree, Kimberly Slaughter and Gail (Michael) Bussie; uncles Keith (Vanessa) Slaughter, Ulysses “Butch” Slaughter, and Lamar Moore; as well as a special aunt, Claudia Cobbs and Godmother, Cindi Mae Gloster. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family, friends and  co-workers. She leaves special friends, Missy Meilach and Dee “The Boss” Brown.

Vanessa was preceded in death by her father, Harry Moorer, Sr.; maternal great grandparents, Irene and Herman Griffin; maternal grandmother, Callie Slaughter and paternal grandmother,  Johnnie Mae Moorer; maternal grandfather, Ulysses Slaughter and paternal grandfather, Clifford Moorer; a brother Mark Williams; great aunt Nancy Alexander and auntie, Mary Noble; uncles, Clifton M.
