Virgie Young Obituary

Ms. Virgie Young, 87, who resided on Rue Renoir St. in South Bend, Indiana passed away Thursday, April 17, 2025 at the Center for Hospice Care, Mishawka.

Virgie was born to the union of Leonard Young and Mourine (Buchanan) Allen on December 4th, 1934 in Tupelo, Mississippi. Virgie relocated to South Bend, Indiana in 1958. Virgie had three sons, Keith (Pam), David, and Anthony (Michelle) Young. Virgie believed in God and was a devoted Missionary Baptist with amazing faith in God. Virgie would read her bible and pray.

Virgie enjoyed living life. She participated in the bowling league for many years and won numerous trophies, awards, and championships. You could catch Virgie gaming with her sister and friends or completing a variety of puzzles or card games with her family. She enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and loved ones.

She was a ball of fire and didn’t mind speaking her mind and protecting the ones she loved. She valued her family above all. She was a devoted and loving mother, sister, grandparent, daughter, friend, and helpful to anyone she met. She would give the shirt off her back to anyone.

Virgie graduated from Manassas High School in Memphis, Tennessee. Virgie worked for various companies in the South Bend area like Planned Parenthood and trucking industries until her retirement from IMI Industries as a Logistic Supervisors in the early 2000’s. After retirement, she decided to go back to work and give back to the community by working at Healthy Families and Edison School in the Foster Grandparent Program and as a volunteer for different programs like American Red Cross, Military Program, and Tax Screener for United Way. Virgie was a hard worker and dedicated her life to working hard for her family.

Preceding her in everlasting peace are her parents, sisters Pearl Kyle and Ann Spearman, brothers Erskine Allen and John Allen, and granddaughter, Leslie Young and very close friends, Linda Walters and Hazel Golden. Left to cherish her memory are her children and grandchildren, Derlando (Cassanda), Kanesha (Justin), Duronda, Melinda, Tyrese, Landon, Alissa, Shanese, Anthony Jr, Loretta, and Tresean and 15 great-grandchildren. Along with her siblings her sisters, Johnni (Robert) Toombs, Mary Allen, Shelia (Ronald) Atkins and brother Robert (Cathi) Allen.

We would like to thank the people at Bell Tower’s Memory Care Unit for their exceptional care and special thanks to her caregiver, Debra (Gussy as Virgie would call her) Schaffer and Joann Walker, who helped care for Virgie in various ways.

Virgie will truly be missed, but the memories and love she gave will continue to live through us. Forever in Our Hearts.
